The Battle Royale's Specialized Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible This Season

The game developers has a special treat prepared for the popular battle royale gamers, perfectly timed for festive season. Fans of this game's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when Season 27: Amped goes live on Nov. 4.

Introducing The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this feature gives players a burst of forward momentum when climbing over obstacles. As explained key developer the design lead, Mantle Boosting was previously been a feature of Apex Legends for some time, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." But it's no easy feat for the average player, and typically employed by pro gamers in Ranked Mode or tournaments. In this update, the team simplifies the process for everyone to execute these advanced movement boosts.

"This technique existed in the game for some time, but the movement requires skill to pull off and gamers would never know it's possible without outside knowledge," the designer states. "We're adding a visual cue so users can clearly identify when and how to activate the fast-paced movement ability, opening up the feature and adding new ways to compete for more players."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

Why make a once niche movement quirk available to everyone? Principal designer the development lead explains developers wants players to feel powerful — even those who are inexperienced.

"[The playerbase] performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we looked around at our competition, looked at what our players execute, and we wondered, 'What if we provide these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer clarifies. "Since right now, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to use — it requires to remap your keybinds and execute within precise timings. So we said, 'What if we create a more official version?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is primarily the central theme in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, Rampart, and Valkyrie receiving buffs to maintain them in motion. Recovery time on her tactical ability has been decreased, and the Gravity Lift will propel players upward much quicker than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover feature overhead protection and capability to grant speed boosts to allies in range. However the spotlight is on the high-flying this Legend who's getting the most attention now, with multiple tweaks implemented to make her more potent, faster, and more lethal.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," states Legend designer Ian Holstead. "Certainly she was dominant previously, but with the introduction of new Legends, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it seemed like she's not very relevant in current Apex. It was an ideal chance for the team to reexamine a bunch of aspects in her abilities and essentially restore her to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, the developer notes the team evaluated each of her abilities and implemented significant modifications. Her jetpack received improvements, boosting her speed while airborne, and this equipment regenerates three times faster, enabling the player to remain longer aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her own Missile Swarm, which was enhanced to tag opponents who are hit from the missiles. Her Skyward Dive ability — which launches her entire squad into the air for repositioning or retreat — now takes much less time to activate. She's also getting some new Legend Upgrades that users can select to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her rockets, or accelerate her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead says.

Map Changes

Additionally, the lone airborne map, Olympus, is getting a mobility-focused overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands bottlenecks and makes claiming the high ground a bit less daunting. Respawn says Apex Legends this update focuses on giving players the tools they need to keep up with the competition.

"Really, we examined Apex's fundamental nature as a movement shooter," says principal designer the lead.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped releases November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
