A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the site and one more individual who fled following the incident was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been transported to medical facility.

The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location displayed the building left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He thought the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the explosion, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to reporters, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the line of duty.
